He is often portrayed as an independent and self-reliant individual clad in furs and carrying a musket. He is ready and able to take on any foe, man or beast.Over the years, the Mansfield sports teams, known as the Mountaineers, have known their share of success. Several Mountaineers have gone on to professional sports careers. The story of the Mountaineer, however, comes from the battlefield, rather than the sporting arena.While the early settlers of Mann’s Field certainly were mountaineers, the origins of the Mountaineer lies with the Ladies’ Aid Society, which operated during the American Civil War.Most of the information in this article was provided by the book Tioga Mountaineers by Chester Bailey, Mansfield historian and former owner of the Mansfield Advertiser. Additional information came from the 101st Pa. Historical Society. The society credits Bailey’s book, along with several other sources. These sources, as well as Tri-Counties Genealogy and History by Joyce M. Tice, provide additional histories of the unit.School Colors Mansfield’s official school colors are Red and Black. History In 1862 Mansfield Classical Seminary became the Mansfield Normal School. In addition, the Director works in collaboration with the Mansfield Foundation to raise external funding for intercollegiate athletics and serves as the principal liaison and representative for athletics with the campus community, conference, and national affiliations. The Director is a faculty position, represented by the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties (APSCUF) and a member of an academic department. The Director will have a lead role in program assessment and in athletics facilities development and is expected to achieve high expectations with accountability for bottom line results.The Director of Athletics is a faculty member in the Department of Athletics Faculty and as such shall be a fully functioning member of the department as defined in the APSCUF CBA.The Director provides leadership and oversees all aspects of the intercollegiate athletics program including the supervision of all programs and personnel, budgeting, contest scheduling, transportation, scheduling of facilities, fundraising, the recruitment of academically and athletically talented student-athletes, and the recruitment and evaluation of coaches. In addition, the Director ensures the athletic program achieves campus, conference and NCAA rules compliance.
