Job Description:

Tempest is looking for an experienced US-based mobile engineer to join our strongly mission-driven team to meaningfully impact the health and lives of people looking to change their relationship with alcohol.

The company

Tempest is a female-founded/led and clinically-proven modern recovery solution for Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). We are a Series A company on a mission to help as many people as possible to develop a healthier relationship with alcohol to improve their happiness, their relationships, and their lives.

In service of our mission, our Engineering team is building a new flagship cross-platform mobile application for iOS and Android to ensure we are meeting our members anywhere they are on their path to improving their lives.

The team

You will work on a cross-functional team alongside two to three other mobile engineers, designers, product managers, and backend engineers to spearhead the development of our mobile application, reporting to an engineering manager that supports the team with technical guidance and cross-functional leadership and that supports you, individually, with career mentorship and development. We operate on 2-week sprints in an Agile-like way.

    You know how to build a product - especially for mobile.

    You have several (minimum: 4) years of professional team-based engineering experience and have built mobile applications and managed Apple and Google app submissions. You may have experience with Flutter (huge bonus, if so), but we know its only a few years old. You do, however, have experience with and an appreciation for cross-platform mobile development and have war stories you could share with us about the experience. You can discuss architecture, systems design, and design patterns, and are pragmatic enough to know that design patterns arent silver bullets to business challenges. You also recognize that writing code is the baseline for engineers, and being able to appreciate and think through business and product challenges and provide your expert engineering guidance to drive solutions is where you will bring your full value to the team.

    Youre scrappy.

    We expect you to be ready for the fast-paced nature of a Series A company and the needs we have of quickly building and deploying software. This is an environment where we need to optimize our speed and balance it with an eye towards the mid to long term. Practically, that means things like:
    • We will architect quickly and in a way that allows us to move quickly now while not backing us into a difficult-to-escape corner later.
    • We wont prioritize things like high code coverage now, but will write code that is easily testable in the future.
    • We will question every process and thing we do if its slowing us down and not adding value to the team or mission.
    • We wont chase shiny technology; well use technologies and tools that enable us to simplify our environment and move faster, while keeping us as open as possible to future possibilities.

      Youre autonomous - and curious.

      We will expect you to hit the ground running upon joining. Were looking for experience that will enable you to move quickly without hand holding. We place deep trust in our team members to be curious, to reach out to others to get guidance and ask questions, and to move quickly, while considering the impact each individuals actions have on the rest of the team. You will be no exception to those expectations. Your curiosity will also drive a solutions-oriented mindset expected of everyone on the team:
      • Is another team in the company asking you for things you think we shouldnt be responsible for? Seek to understand why youre being asked and what solutions we could offer to reduce dependencies and improve operations.
      • Faced with a product request that is incredibly challenging to fulfill? Seek to understand the intent, share your concerns, and offer solutions to your concerns to keep the product and company moving forward quickly.


        We know how wild the market is right now and how important it is to respect your time and move quickly. Our interview process will follow the following framework (with any changes communicated to you in advance):
        • Initial 60 minute call with our Director of Engineering and/or team Engineering Manager
          • Focus of topics will be:
          • Introductions to company and culture
          • Mutual team and organizational fit
          • High-level technical topics (no whiteboard or coding, no trick questions)
          • Next steps
            • A 90-120 minute block of calls with additional members of the team (with team members potentially coming from our Engineering, Product Management, and People teams)
            • Focus of topics will range from the following:
            • Deeper technical topics (again, no trick questions or whiteboarding)
            • Organizational fit
            • Product and Engineering collaboration
            • Product thinking
              • A final 30-60 minute call with our Director of Engineering and/or team Engineering Manager to discuss offer details, if you are to be offered a position.
              • Focus of topics will be:
              • Offer details
              • Logistics (start date, notice, etc.)
              • And any other general topics to help you make up your mind

                We endeavor to keep this process timeboxed to a maximum of 2.5 calendar weeks, from first to final contact.

                At any point between these steps, the decision may be made that you are not an appropriate candidate for the team. You will be kept informed of all decisions to move you forward in the process or not.
