The Opportunity

JUST Capital is seeking an experienced Senior Manager to lead, develop and implement research on how companies currently serve their workers, and what looks like leadership in the future. JUST Capital is known for research on worker issues, from measuring a company's commitment to diversity and equity, and our leadership on EEO-1 disclosure to identifying research opportunities on how companies measure "good jobs" over time. Other areas of research include worker health and safety, and career opportunities, and internal mobility for the workforce. The successful candidate will identify potential new areas of research and further develop existing areas for deeper focus. The research consists of primary data collection for JUST Capital's annual rankings and for new and emerging themes, data analysis and research reports using JUST Capital's proprietary databases (which contain metrics on worker issues listed above), and reviews of corporate policies collected by JUST Capital.

This role contributes to JUST Capital's mission, strategy, and deliverables by:

  • Identifying, collecting and, processing data that measures how America's largest corporations perform on issues identified by the public;
  • Scoring, benchmarking, and analyzing company performance to produce JUST Capital's annual rankings, indexes, and other research projects on corporate stakeholder performance;
  • Maintaining subject matter expertise and conducting specific research work in key areas related to JUST Capital's programmatic and investment initiatives to make the business case for just corporate behavior as they relate to workers.

    The Senior Manager of Worker Policies Research reports to the Head of Research. This position is different to the Director of Wage and Worker Benefits research. This position focuses on workplace diversity and equity, worker health and safety, and career opportunities and development for the workforce, with novel and emerging themes in this area. The Director of Wage and Worker Benefits focuses on estimating wages of workers in different companies using different data sources and creating distributions of those results, along with measuring worker benefits.

    The key responsibilities are:
    • Under the supervision of the Head of Research, and working closely with JUST Capital's programs and corporate engagement team and investments team, develop and implement a set of research projects on worker policy and performance issues that furthers JUST Capital's thought leadership, contributes to the organization's programmatic initiatives and supports the corporate business case for investing in workers
    • Develop metrics to measure corporate behavior on: workplace diversity, equity, and inclusion, worker health and safety, workforce career opportunities and development and other emerging worker issues
    • Serve as the internal subject matter expert on the areas of work outlined herein, explore emerging areas of research on workers and jobs, including how to measure contingent work, mobility and turnover, and other areas.
    • Oversee data collection and data quality analyses for the above areas for JUST Capital's annual rankings and research reports
    • Develop novel and experimental data collection and analyses for emerging topics pertinent to this field of research
    • Perform statistical analysis of JUST Capital's data for publication in reports and online channels
    • Identify external research experts for partnership on thought leadership

      Requirements

      Research and Technical Experience
      • Familiarity and experience conducting research on publicly-listed corporations and/or policy analysis on corporate policies, best practices, or behaviors related to worker well-being and other Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) issues. Experience with social policy at the national/population level can also be considered
      • Experience with data collection and data quality assurance
      • Statistical analysis skills to run mainly univariate and bi-variate analysis, create new variables, and understand data quality during data collection, with proven skills in a leading software package e.g. SQL, R, or Python, STATA, SPSS, etc.
      • Experience with conceiving, developing and disseminating research
      • Ability to write and prepare high quality reports and presentations for different audiences e.g. public, corporate, and investor audiences
      • Experience managing and mentoring a team of research analysts and/or interns

        Skills And Characteristics
        • Strong project and resource management skills with the ability to prioritize between competing demands
        • Excellent written, analytical and verbal communication skills
        • Ability to work as a team player

          Educational and Professional Background
          • 6+ years of professional experience working in worker policies research or advocacy
          • An undergraduate degree in public policy, economics, sociology, social science, business, or other relevant fields is required. An advanced degree is strongly preferred
