Summary
This role develops and manages personnel, projects and membership in the Advanced Research in Electronics Assembly (AREA) Consortium. Conducts and supervises fundamental experimental and analytical research relating to process development for advanced concepts in electronics assembly. Primary research focus includes current and emerging technologies in the areas of surface mount electronics assembly, semiconductor packaging and assembly materials. Defines and oversees research projects in collaboration with member companies, university faculty and graduate students, including identification and recruitment of new membership. This position reports to Director of the Advanced Process Lab (APL).
Principal Accountabilities (Functional)

  • Acts as operations and business development manager for the AREA consortium.
  • Identifies business and research opportunities for the growth of the AREA consortium.
  • Develops and documents the AREA Consortium Research plan for each year.
  • Responsible for financial performance and budget process of the AREA Consortium.
  • Interacts with companies involved in the production of electronic products and materials.
  • Utilizes formal engineering education and job related experience to solve daily problems arising from customer requests for process help in electronics assembly.
  • Promotes the enhancement of the APL reputation through competent research, technical reports and documentation, consortium activities, publishing of world class papers, and representing the APL at customer sites, in-house meetings, and various conferences.
  • Up to 10% travel to visit prospective/existing consortium members in support of AREA membership growth.
  • Prepares and organizes semi-annual AREA events, hosting 50-60 customers at research review meetings.
  • Promotes marketing of the APL via website content, such as news updates and meeting content, etc.
  • Make consortium research content available to membership via website and other media.
  • Prepares and releases bi-monthly AREA Consortium Newsletters for external and internal distribution.
  • Manages University student research contracts and supervises graduate research students, university faculty and outside consultants in support of AREA Consortium research.

    Minimum Requirements
    • M.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or Materials Engineering with 8-10 years of relevant experience OR Ph.D. with 5-7 experience in a related field.
    • Knowledge in many aspects of engineering including but not limited to: mechanics, metallurgy, finite element analysis, vibration, data analysis and experimental techniques.
    • Proficient communicator, technical speaker, writer and presenter.

      Responsibility for Quality Procedures, Ethical Practices and Data Integrity
      • Adheres to Universal Instruments Quality System policies and procedures.
      • Practices and promotes safe laboratory procedures and operations.
      • Enforces ethical practices for data collection, analysis and reporting and assures scientific reporting integrity.

        Physical Demands
        • Requires the ability to use a computer on a frequent basis.
        • The ability to travel up to 10% to customer sites or technical conferences, both foreign and domestic.
