Job Description:

Position Description: Operate welding equipment consisting of an A/C or D/C generator and rheostat to control flow of electricity and wires lead¬ing from the poles of the generator, one to a clamp to be attach¬ed to the object to be welded, the other to an electrode holder; also miscellaneous holding, aligning and positioning devices and fixtures, holds down bars, chill bars, retaining plates, etc. Attach wire to object to be welded (straight or reverse polarity as required) and insert electrode welding rod in electrode holder. Adjust current to proper amperage. Mani¬pulate electrode holder and welding rod to complete a circuit and strike an electric arc at point to be welded. Melt rod in the heat of the arc and fuse metal to complete the weld. Requires a knowledge of the characteristics of the various metals and alloys with which the welder may work and the compo¬sition and use of the various types of bare and coated welding rods. Requires ability to follow prescribed welding procedures and techniques and sufficient knowledge of welding procedure to weld to specification when allowed latitude in method of welding. May repair welds. May clean and prepare proper grooves for particular types of welding. May preheat parts to be welded and anneal or post heat to reduce metal strain resulting from welding operation. May weld in various positions such as horizontal, vertical and overhead. May specialize and excel on a particular type of arc welding. Perform tasks that are incidental to the performance of the operation, such as: � Clean up his/her immediate work area. Under excep¬tional circumstances, may be assigned to perform general cleaning in the department area. This classification does not include general routine department cleaning. � Pre and/or post operation and safety checks of equip¬ment. � May be required to verify that he has followed his written instructions. These instructions may include the appropriate operation sheets or quality assurance directives. � Perform administrative tasks relating to the classifi¬cation. Position Requirements: Experience welding in a manufacturing envirnonment and/or certification in welding preferred. Must be able to show mechanical aptitude.
